WHAT IS IT?
When coming across an old photograph that is damaged due to water, heat, stains, missing pieces, etc. – It can be saved with restoration process. If a photograph needs alteration or a touch up to get a more appealing result – it can be achieved with retouching process.
Before deciding what to do with the photograph, it is important to know the difference between the two processes that are used: Convention (non-digital) and Digital Restoration & Retouching.
CONVENTIONAL (NON-DIGITAL) RESTORATION & RETOUCHING
This process requires the restorer or retoucher to have physical contact with the original, which means all changes are applied directly onto the original photograph or occasionally the negative. The process may consist of the usage of paint, airbrush, and a variety of chemicals to achieve the desired result, whether it would be to stop or restore the deterioration of the photograph or to retouch the photograph for aesthetic reasons. This technique may help and may also harm the photographs when being done. All alterations are also permanent and there is no reverting back once the changes are made.
DIGITAL RESTORATION & RETOUCHING
This is the process we use.
The digital process restores and brings life back to old, damaged photograph or retouches any photograph without altering the original photograph or negative. The whole process takes place in the computer. The original is scanned. The scanned copy of the photograph or negative becomes a digital file which the restorer/retoucher works on to repair and bring the photograph back to its original state and/or perform retouching to achieve a desired result on the photograph. Changes on the file are not permanent and could be worked on indefinitely since it's a scanned copy of the photograph. Digital process takes restoration & retouching a step further. It allows retouchers to perform alteration on photograph, whether to remove, add, or replace objects, people, backgrounds, etc. When a desired state of the restoration or retouching is reached, the file could be saved onto any storage device such as CD or Flash Drive for unlimited printing and sharing.
